Hamilton began in 1892 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where it built railway-grade pocket watches and later supplied large quantities of timepieces to the United States armed forces. After years of financial difficulty the name passed into Swiss ownership in the 1970s, and the brand is now run from Biel/Bienne as part of the Swatch Group. Its catalogue leans heavily on military and aviation history, with the Khaki family at its core, alongside design-led pieces such as the asymmetric Ventura. The company has a long record of supplying watches to film productions, so its models are often recognisable on screen.
